But they are not the safest toothbrush, as a recent study found.

Researchers from the University of Nottingham, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University at Oxford tested the efficacy of toothbrushing with a carbon fiber toothbrush.

They found that the carbon fiber bristles were more effective than a plastic one at cleaning the inside and outside of the mouth, but not the inside.

This study was published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.

The study was led by Dr Muhsin Momeni, a lecturer in clinical dentistry at the University’s School of Dentistry.

Dr Momenis team examined the results of a clinical trial on the effectiveness of carbon fiber brushes, comparing the carbon fibre bristles used in the study to that used in consumer products, like toothbrills and razors.

The results were surprising.

Dr Peter Haines, Professor of Oral Health and Dentistry at Imperial College London, said:”The carbon fiber brush that cleans the inside is not a good choice for people who are looking for a simple but effective alternative to using a plastic toothbrush because it is not made from a high quality material like polycarbonates.”

However, it is effective at cleaning some teeth and helping to protect the gums from harmful bacteria.

“What is the toothbrush?

Dr Wael Khoury, from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at the Institute of Dentifrice at King’s College London and the Royal College of Surgeons of Great Britain, said the research showed the importance of making sure that a toothbrush was well-made.

He said: “We know that brushing is the most common way of brushing in the home, but brushing with a toothbrush does not help to clean teeth.

So it is important that the brushing be as strong and durable as possible so it can withstand everyday usage.

“I think carbon fiber is a fantastic alternative to plastic toothpastes, which is a bad choice for most people because it has a higher resistance to corrosion.”

There are many other factors that influence the effectiveness and longevity of carbon fibre teethbrushing, including the material and how it is used, but it is a great choice for the general population who are trying to keep their teeth clean.

“Dr Hains said it was important that consumers knew the brush’s properties.

He said: ‘We are not saying that all carbon fiber brushing should be used by all people, but some people prefer it, others don’t and there is no evidence to suggest that they would be better off using plastic toothpaste or even toothbrillas.’

This research shows that carbon fiber and its bristles can be both effective and cost-effective and should be considered as part of the consumer product portfolio.”
